Neff Rodriquez: Fantasy Author Writing for the Reality of her People.

Self-publishing as an aspiring novelist can feel like the tougher choice, and many will choose the latter of publishing agencies and corporations. However, for one author, the choice to self-publish is the only option. Neff Rodriguez is a book reader and fantasy novelist carving out a space for herself and her BIPOC and queer community. For Rodriquez, this isn’t a financial choice, it’s about integrity and inclusion.


Sitting down with the novelist and social media content creator, Rodriguez discussed the issues involving diversity and inclusion in the publishing industry as an author. It quickly became easy to understand that Rodriguez is writing for those lost in the whitewashed pages of popular books. After meeting with multiple publishing agencies and ghostwriters, she quickly learned her culture and authenticity were challenged. Rodriquez’s passion is inspiring and clear to see why we need more authors and people like her.


“I was making changes for people who wouldn’t even read my book in the first place.” Rodriguez express her frustration with publishing agents.


Of course, queer and BIPOC professionals do find work in the industry. Still, they are met with additional pressures cultural re-writes. Similar to Rodriquez many BIPOC, as well as members of the LGBTQIA+ community, are choosing to self-publish. Rodriquez helps to put much of the publishing experience into perspective based on her experience, which is eerily similar to many marginalized authors.


Not only is Neff Rodriquez an author tell BIPOC and queer stories but she creates content online to showcase BIPOC and queer authors, book, and their characters. She's creating a safe place to learn and have fun, the way all books and people should be understood.
