It’s not a surprising fact that reading at a young age helps stimulate parts of the brain while improving language skills and cultivating a love for reading, as reported by all4kids.org. Reading encourages your child to succeed academically early on, instills a passion for learning, and leads to improved grades in all subjects.
Oral language abilities are the foundation for literacy development. Children who begin to read at a young age have a bigger general knowledge base, a larger vocabulary, and are better readers. Early readers may recognize a greater quantity of words by sight. Allowing them to get a greater understanding of and knowledge about their surroundings.
However, many children struggle with finding access to books that interest them to sustain their passion for reading. Scholastic.com recorded nine out of 10, roughly 88% are more likely to finish a book they choose themselves. They also stated that about 56% of school-aged readers don’t have school libraries with enough books they want to read.
One organization has taken action to rectify the situation. Reading is Fundamental of Southern California provides new books to underserved children to promote literacy and motivate children to read. RiF (Reading is Fundamental) is a nonprofit organization asking for donations to help books reach the hands of children.
Rif has gone as far as to offer curbside, no contact, book pickups during pandemic restrictions to ensure children are not going without books. Executive director Carol Henault has pushed to get their message out and give books to kids in need.
“This is a critical time for young children. We want them to have real books and a break from their screens”, Henault wrote in a letter to everyone on the RiF site.
